Spirit of Diversity Dinner

Celebrating Diversity, Recognizing Excellence, Making Connections

On April 19, 2018, more than 300 guests gathered to celebrate Duquesne's commitment to diversity and inclusion. Five outstanding Duquesne students were honored for their academic and community service achievements. Their volunteer efforts at organizations including Precocity Academy, Open Hand Ministries, Casa San Jose and Strong Women Strong Girls exemplify Duquesne's mission of serving others.

Olympic Gold Medalist and former WNBA star Swin Cash delivered the keynote address. As the founder of non-profit organization Cash for Kids, she encouraged attendees to channel their talents and passion to serve others and foster a culture of acceptance, kindness and understanding. She commended Duquesne's intentional efforts and commitment to diversity and inclusion, and she recognized the University's longstanding presence in the local community. "Swin Cash is widely respected and recognized by many for her efforts of helping others both locally and nationwide," said Jeff Mallory, assistant vice president for diversity, inclusion and student advancement. "She has a personal history and perspective that is rich and nothing short of unique. Above all, Swin is quick to acknowledge her love for the Pittsburgh region and has never forgotten where it all started for her."

UPMC Health Plan and UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion served as the event's presenting sponsors and share the University's commitment to diversity, inclusion and service. These and other corporate partnerships ensure that the Office of Diversity and Inclusion can continue raising scholarship funds and extending education in our communities.

"The representation of those in attendance really speaks to the diverse, unique relationships that have been established and, more importantly, to the efforts we in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion are collectively working toward," said Mallory. "We are privileged to have impactful relationships with many community and corporate partners and their support of our students."
