Andrea Scheve, MM, NMT, MT - BC Director of UPMC Medical Music Therapy (guitar), a graduate of Florida State University and Karen Smith, Music Therapy Intern (cello), a graduate of Duquesne University make music with family members of Intensive Care patients in UPMC waiting rooms as part of the Family Comfort Rounds program. The music helps families get their minds off of the long hours spent waiting and provides a time for stress reduction and relaxation. Often times, family members are able to express emotions freely during music therapy when they are trying to stay strong for their critically ill loved one.
Another population music therapy serves at Magee-Women's Hospital of UPMC is premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The music stimulates neurological development and has positive effects on the infant's health, as well as providing an opportunity for parent-baby bonding and attachment.
Andrea and Karen also provide weekly music therapy group sessions in the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) where older adult patients are participating in rehabilitation to gain strength to leave the hospital. The music encourages singing and active music making to help build respiratory strength and stamina as well as working other muscles needed for activities of daily living. |
