Annual Human Rights Film Series Slated at Duquesne University

From Silence to Solidarity, Duquesne University's 2016 Human Rights Film Series, will bring into focus some of the most critical human rights abuses in our world today.

Presented by Duquesne's Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, the series' theme for this year was developed to draw attention to solidarity and demonstrate how meaningful and informed participation has the power to break the silence that surrounds many deplorable moral, social and economic conditions.

"This year's films show the need for collective care, communal support and mutual concern to promote shared goals and ideals," said Dr. Edith Krause, chair of modern languages and literatures. "They intend to educate diverse audiences in order to promote the dignity of all human beings and the well-being of the world in which we live."

The series opens on Thursday, Jan. 21, with a screening of The Hunting Ground, a documentary that explores the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. Since the film's premier at Sundance, it has been screened at the White House and at hundreds of college campuses across the country. Following the screening, Laura Summers, an education and training specialist at Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, will discuss sexual violence and field questions from the audience.

Each film in the series will be screened at 7 p.m. in Room 105 of College Hall on consecutive Thursdays starting this week. The series includes:
