Assistant Vice President/Chief Information Officer Named at Duquesne
Duquesne University has named Charles R. Bartel assistant vice president and chief information officer, effective Monday, Aug. 18. He is currently director of global information technology services at Carnegie Mellon University.
"I am excited to be joining Duquesne University as chief information officer," said Bartel. "I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and administration to provide the Duquesne community with information technology services that will help to achieve the mission of the University."
Bartel will be responsible for providing proactive and strategic leadership of Duquesne's information technology services, facilities, hardware and software, and professional staff. Specifically, he will oversee Computing and Technology Services, including management and strategic planning for all information technology services, including administrative computing, centralized infrastructure and a variety of technology support services. Bartel will report to David Beaupré, vice president for management and business.
At CMU, Bartel has served in numerous leadership roles including director of operations and director of network services before being named to his current post in 2008. His accomplishments include directing Wireless Andrew, a first-of-its-kind campus-wide WiFi deployment that paved the way for the wireless networks available on college campuses today. He also served as chair of the board of PREPnet, Pennsylvania's first Internet service provider.
Bartel, a resident of Robinson Township, has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering technology from Thomas A. Edison State College and a master's degree in public management from CMU.
