Bethel Park Resident Recognized for Excellence in Service to Mission
Dr. Janie Harden Fritz, associate professor in Duquesne University’s McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, was recognized with the Presidential Excellence Award in Service to the Mission.
Fritz, who has been affiliated with Duquesne since 1992, serves as director of undergraduate studies in the communication department and director of the master’s program for the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies.
Immediate past president of the national Religious Communication Association, as well as vice president and second vice president; Fritz is vice president of the Eastern Communication Association (ECA), assuming presidency in 2011; and holds other positions with the ECA and the Pennsylvania Communication Association.
The nomination letter from Dean Christopher Duncan noted that Fritz was the winner of the school’s service award and that “her record of service to her department, the College, the University, the community and, most notably, her professional associations is highly admirable and demonstrates an almost boundless energy.”
Besides delivering more than 30 talks on campus and in the community, Fritz was involved in a committee to develop a liberal arts-based forensics program, redesigned courses for service learning and advised student groups. She is a member of the board of the Robert and Patricia Gussin Spiritan Division of Academic Programs.
In her nomination for the award, it was noted, “She has demonstrated a consistent pattern of extraordinary dedication to the University… she has enhanced the reputation, prestige and mission of Duquesne University regionally, nationally and internationally.”
Fritz received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009 and the Eugene P. Beard Faculty Award for Leadership in Ethics in 2007.
