Brahms on the Bluff Set for Second Season, with Strings Attached
The haunting, dramatic music of Brahms’ music for string ensembles will be featured in the second season of Brahms on the Bluff, a historic, three-year concert series presented by Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music.
Each of the upcoming four Brahms on the Bluff performances, which are collectively titled Strings Attached, features chamber music written for various combinations of violin, viola, cello and piano, as well as a number of works for solo piano.
“The upcoming season showcases works that are performed only rarely, such as two string sextets featured in the Sept. 24 kickoff concert, Sextet in the City, according to David Allen Wehr, artistic director for the Brahms series and holder of the Jack W. Geltz Piano Chair in the Mary Pappert School of Music. “The commitment and dedication required to assemble a program from the complete presentations of Brahms’ chamber music makes this a musical feat that is not often accomplished.”
Along with Wehr’s performances on piano, the 2006-07 concerts will feature several Duquesne faculty members, including violinists Rachel and Charles Stegeman and Ann Martindale Williams, who also is principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The concert schedule follows, with all performances starting at 3 p.m. Sundays in PNC Recital Hall on the Duquesne campus. Each performance will be preceded by a 2:15 p.m. informative talk and followed by a complimentary public reception. Suggested donation is $10 per person.
Sextet in the City
The opening concert of the second season pairs two luscious sextets for strings with two solo piano works, the passionate Rhapsodies op. 79 and the intimate Intermezzi op. 117.
Quintessentially in “Cinq”
The second concert features two delightful string quintets and the dark and brooding Piano Quartet no. 3, written when Brahms was in deep despair over his love for Clara Schumann.
The Voice of the Violin
Lyrical and intense, the three violin-piano duo sonatas have long taken their place as the indisputable classics of the genre. The Four Piano Pieces op. 119, Brahms's final works for piano are introspective, passionate and playful.
This concert showcases Brahms eagerly awaited first two string quartets, which he completed at age 40, as well as two piano works, the epic Four Ballades op. 10, and the richly expressive Fantasies op 116.
