Duquesne University Public Safety is Freezin’ for a Reason

Willingly taking a leap into a near-freezing river doesn't necessarily sound like fun to most people. However, nine members of Duquesne University's Public Safety department will accept this chilly challenge on Sunday, Dec. 2, by jumping into the Ohio River during the Polar Plunge, a fundraiser sponsored by local law enforcement agencies for the Special Olympics.

Team members Robert Brown, Jaclyn DeNardo, John Helch, Jeffrey Kardos, Joe Palmer, Amanda Schaefers, Mattie Selkowitz, Lee Speer and Carl Stivenson have so far exceeded their fundraising expectations, reaching  more than $1,300-but are hoping to hit $1,500.

You can help boost the plungers over their fundraising goal by sponsoring a member of the Public Safety team. From the Polar Plunge site, click "sponsor a plunger" and enter a participant's name. Online donations will be automatically added to the team's account. To make an in-person donation by cash or check, call Public Safety at 412.396.6002 and ask to speak with one of the plunge team members.

The fundraiser is in its third year in Pittsburgh. Last year's event drew more than 5,000 law enforcement officers from agencies in Allegheny County and surrounding areas, raising more than $200,000 for the charity.
