Duquesne Welcomes Internationally Acclaimed Poet James Ragan

James Ragan, a prominent literary force whose writing brings awareness to global concerns and issues of social justice, will read from his works at a special Duquesne University event.Honored in the United States and abroad as an ambassador of poetry, Ragan has read for heads of state, including the Soviet Union’s Mikhail Gorbachev and Czech President Vaclav Havel, and presented the keynote address at the 2008 World Literature Today Conference in Beijing, China.

“We are so very pleased to welcome internationally acclaimed poet James Ragan to Duquesne,” said Dr. Jim Henderson, professor in the School of Education and director of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Center. “Members of the UCEA Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice believe we must do more to identify and remedy conditions that marginalize, trivialize, and suppress ‘have not’ students, schools and communities.”

Ragan is the author of Too Long a Solitude (2009), In the Talking Hours (2004), Womb-Weary, The Hunger Wall, Lusions, Selected Poems, and Shouldering the World. He is a former Fulbright professor, received the Emerson Poetry Prize, a Pulitzer Prize nomination and eight Pushcart Prize nominations, among many other honors. As a playwright and screenwriter, Ragan has worked on projects with Clint Eastwood and Olympia Dukakis, among other notables, and was involved with the production of such films as The Longest Yard, The Border, Matilda and the Academy Award winner, The Deer Hunter.

This event is funded through the Czech Republic Consulate and sponsored by Duquesne’s UCEA Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice and the School of Education.
