Fraud: Duquesne Professors Tackle Issue That Hits Small Businesses Hard
Two accounting professors at Duquesne University have received funding to survey area companies about fraud awareness and to conduct free fraud risk assessments.
Bob Kollar, director of the Master of Accountancy program in the Palumbo•Donahue School of Business, and Valerie Trott Williams, assistant professor, received a grant from the Institute for Fraud Prevention to look at perceptions and responses to fraud in small- to mid-sized businesses, which face these issues more often than larger companies. The two are asking area organizations to participate in a confidential, 10-minute survey, which is available at www.surveymonkey.com/duquesnefraudsurvey.
“Through the survey assessment, and by working directly with local small business owners, we hope to increase their understanding of how their assets are at risk and how they can buffer themselves from the effects of fraud—particularly in tough economic times,” said Kollar.
Kollar, Williams and their teams will share their findings and prevention tips for companies on the American Entrepreneur radio show on MoneyTalk 1360 WMNY, and at the Small Business Development Center’s Entrepreneur’s Growth Conference next June.
As part of the project, a limited number of area organizations will be selected to participate in a free fraud risk assessment, starting in October. The two-part assessment will be performed by a group of senior-level honors accounting majors under the supervision of an accounting faculty member, with follow-up in the spring.
