Hungry for Information about Agribusiness? See ‘Food, Inc.’

A free screening of Food, Inc., part of the fourth annual Duquesne University Human Rights Film Series, Power and Privation, is set for Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. in Room 105 College Hall.

Directed by Robert Kenner, Food, Inc. reveals how a handful of corporations control most of our food and how often these corporations put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of American farmers, the safety of workers and the environment.

The film exposes the dangers of the food industry including food borne illnesses such as E. coli, by focusing on Barbara Kowalcyk, whose two-year-old son, Kevin, died from E. coli poisoning after eating a hamburger. In addition, the film discusses the nation's widespread obesity problem, particularly among children, as well as epidemic levels of diabetes among adults. The film attributes these problems to poor oversight of profit-driven corporations.

Dave Schmidt, president and CEO of the International Food Information Council Foundation, will speak before the screening.

The Human Rights Film Series is presented by Duquesne's Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
