Music School Presents Fantasy in Concert Series
Romantic favorites and rarely performed piano music by composers Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann will be featured in Fantasy, the second concert in the Mary Pappert School of Music’s Bicentennials on the Bluff series.
Fantasy, is a solo piano recital featuring David Allen Wehr, the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair and artistic director for the series, who will perform the concert in its entirety.
Wehr's performance will include fantasies written by both composers, works that are considered to be cornerstones of the Romantic piano repertoire. Also on the program are two Chopin works, a nocturne and a polonaise, pieces in which the composer was able to portray larger-than-life feelings—passion, drama and patriotism—in smaller lyrical and dance forms.
A pre-concert event, Schumann’s Carnaval in the Twenty-first Century, will feature Dr. Benjamin Binder, assistant professor of musicianship, performing selections from Carnaval paired with newly commissioned pieces inspired by Schumann’s originals, including the world premiere of Joshua Fineberg’s Fantastic Zoology.
Bicentennials on the Bluff showcases chamber works and piano music by Chopin and Schumann, giants of the Romantic movement and two of the world’s most beloved composers, on the 200th anniversary of the year of their births.
