Palumbo-Donahue School of Business Launches Accounting Co-Op Program
A transformational Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) to Master of Accountancy (MAcc) has launched at Duquesne University's Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, allowing students to earn both degrees in five years. Students will also develop the necessary skills to pass the CPA exam.
The program includes a built-in, full-time co-op experience during the spring semester of the senior year, during which students will take no classes and pay no tuition while working at a top public accounting firm or other financial institution.
They would still enjoy all of the privileges of being a full-time Duquesne student but would also be earning excellent pay and enhancing their future careers with hands-on experience, said Dr. Dean McFarlin, Dean of the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business.
"I spend a great deal of time talking with accounting firm representatives, many of whom are our alumni. We already have an outstanding record placing accounting students, but our new co-op program is cutting-edge and taps into evolving trends," McFarlin said. "Accounting firms are increasingly recognizing that having employees with a MAcc is a competitive differentiator."
Accounting firms are finding that students with a Master of Accountancy coupled with a co-op experience are better able to hit the ground running in their first job, McFarlin said.
Jeffrey Ford, a partner at Grossman Yanak & Ford, said the program will give students the opportunity to learn required skills and to network with those in the profession, ultimately leading to a full-time career.
The co-op partners signed on to participate in the program include:
- Ernst & Young
- Grant Thornton
- Grossman, Yanak, and Ford
- Hill, Barth & King
- Schneider Downs
