Scholar Studying ‘Teacher-Leaders’ Named Education Chair at Duquesne
Dr. Jason Margolis, who has been studying “hybrid” teacher leaders, has been named chair of the Department of Instruction and Leadership in Education in the School of Education at Duquesne University. This department prepares teachers to understand their roles in a child’s life and the difference their influence makes throughout the community.
“I am excited to take on this role because of the quality people in my department and the function that our department serves at this crucial juncture in the world of education,” said Margolis. “Because a teacher is so important to a student’s development, a meaningful and dynamic teacher education for becoming and practicing teachers is vital to a teacher’s development.”
As chair, Margolis’ role is to provide support for Duquesne teachers, so that they can better support students.
His current research focuses on “hybrid” teacher leaders, whose official schedule includes K-12 students as well as leading other teachers in some capacity. His work has appeared in Teachers College Record, and he has made several presentations for the American Education Research Association. Margolis began his career as a high school English teacher in New York City.
Previously an associate professor of teacher education and professional development partnerships at Washington State University in Vancouver, Wash., Margolis has a bachelor’s in secondary education from State University of New York at New Paltz, a master’s of science in education from City University of New York at Queens College and a Ph.D. in educational studies from the University of Michigan.
