Symposium to Focus on Communication and Cognitive Impairment
Interventions for individuals who suffer from communication disorders along with a range of cognitive impairments-including severe dementia-will be the focus of the a symposium hosted by the Duquesne University Department of Speech-Language Pathology.
This 7th annual symposium, Effective Interventions from Mild Cognitive Impairment to Severe Dementia: Some New Ideas, will be held Monday, March 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Power Center Ballroom.
"Many of our speech-language pathology students, alumni and externship supervisors work in facilities where they interact with and treat patients with a range of cognitive impairments, so we thought this was an important topic," said Lori Marra, clinical instructor and coordinator of the symposium.
Dr. Michelle S. Bourgeois, a professor of communication sciences and disorders and a clinical researcher at the University of South Florida, will deliver the keynote address. She has published and produced numerous research articles, training manuals, CDs and books on this topic. In addition, Bourgeois has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Aging and the Alzheimer's Association to investigate therapies for spousal and nursing home caregivers.
"Dr. Bourgeois is very well known to our faculty and alumni, and her contributions to the field of speech-language pathology are significant," Marra said. "As a former resident of the Pittsburgh area, we are happy to welcome her back."
