Seybolt speaks on harmonizing humanitarian aid
Dr. Taylor Seybolt of the University of Pittsburgh, author of Humanitarian Military Intervention, spoke on "Harmonizing Humanitarian Aid: From Competition to Cooperation in Rwanda and Afghanistan" on Wednesday, February 25, 2009.
College holds first annual Pascal Day
With leadership from the Policy Center's Dr. Charles Rubin, Duquesne University held its first annual Pascal Day on October 2, 2008. Dr. Robert P. George, member of the President's Council on Bioethics and the Council on Foreign Relations, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University, and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions, gave the inaugural lecture.
Barbara Murock recognized as a "Newsmaker"
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review recently recognized Barb Murock, an alumna of the Policy Center, as a "Newsmaker." Barb works as a health policy analyst for the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.
Drs. McIntyre and Sawicki receive awards
Two Policy Center faculty members received recognition at the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts' awards reception April 17, 2008.
Dr. Moni McIntyre received the College's Excellence in Service to the Mission award for 2007-08. Dr. McIntyre teaches "Theory and Practice of Conflict Resolution," "Non-violent Social Change," and "Community Organizing and Social Movements" in the Policy Center.
Dr. John Sawicki, C.S.Sp., Associate Professor of Political Science, received the College's Excellence in Teaching award for 2007-08. Fr. Sawicki teaches courses in "Terrorism" and "American Defense Policy" in the Policy Center.
Policy Center holds fifth annual Conference on Public Policy and Conflict Resolution
The Policy Center's fifth annual Conference on Public Policy and Conflict Resolution, held April 15 and 16, 2008 and cosponsored with Duquesne University's Center for Catholic Social Thought, took "Poverty Policy: The Continuing Issues and Debate" as its theme.
Leading off the conference was a panel discussing local initiatives relating to poverty and welfare. Members of the panel were:
- Bradley Burger, VP Development, Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh
- Rochelle Jackson, welfare client advocate, Just Harvest
- Honorable Estelle Richman, PA Secretary of Public Welfare
Dr. Thomas J. Massaro, S.J., Boston College, author of the recently published United States Welfare Policy: A Catholic Response, and Dr. Frances Fox Piven, 2008 president of the American Sociological Association, noted political activist for the poor, and author of the recently published Challenging Authority: How Ordinary People Change America (2006) and many other works, gave keynote addresses.
Conference sessions on Wednesday, April 16, featured graduate student papers.
Lopez speaks on the war on terror
Professor George A. Lopez, chair of the University of Notre Dame's International Peace Studies Department, spoke at Duquesne University on Thursday, April 17, where he delivered the 2008 Hesburgh lecture and answered questions on the subject, "Can There Be Peace in the War on Terror?"
Dr. Lewis Irwin returns from Afghanistan
Dr. Lewis Irwin, Associate Professor of Political Science, spoke on "The Challenges of Afghanistan" on March 12, 2008, following his return to the Policy Center from seven months of active duty in Afghanistan as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. Upon his return he was promoted to the rank of colonel.
Mueller speaks on atomic terrorism
Dr. John Mueller, Woody Hayes Chair of National Security Studies at the Ohio State University and author of The Remnants of War, winner of the Georgetown University Book Prize, spoke at the Policy Center on Thursday, January 24, 2008, on the subject "The Atomic Terrorist: Assessing the Likelihood."
Clark speaks on homeland security
The Policy Center hosted a Conference on Homeland Security Policy with Richard Clarke, chief counter-terrorism adviser on the U.S. National Security Council, October 25, 2007.
