Graduate Applications and Requirements

All applicants to the Ph.D. program must have earned a Bachelor's degree at an accredited institution, and completed a minimum of 12 credits of coursework in Psychology. Individuals meeting these prerequisites are invited to apply.

The Deadline for the Application and all supporting materials is December 15th.

First Step: Online Application and GRE/TOEFL reporting

All applicants must fill out and submit a Duquesne online application form:
Online Application for U.S. citizens and permanent residents (or Green Card holders)
Online Application for International applicants (not citizens, permanent residents, or Green Card holders)

For GRE score reports, the Duquesne code is 2196, department code 2100.  International applicants must have TOEFl scores sent to the University

Second Step: Sending of Additional Materials

Your additional application materials -- your curriculum vitae, the three letters of recommendation, (print the Letter of Recommendation Form and mail it to your recommenders first), all transcripts, writing samples, and statement of purpose (see details below) - may be sent online through Interfolio. The link is available at www.interfolio.com. You will find Duquesne listed as a university to which Interfolio sends materials.

  • Two copies of an official academic transcript issued by the registrar of each institution you have attended.
  • GRE/TOEFL Scores: only the general test scores are required. GRE scores must be received by December 15th. The graduate programs at Duquesne University expect a TOEFL score between 80-100 iBT, particularly in our program since graduate students are expected to teach.
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty members who know your work should be submitted with recommender forms. If unable to obtain three you may submit recommendations from employers, volunteer sites, etc.
  • A curriculum vitae which list schools attended, degrees working toward or awarded, names of recommenders, volunteer work, awards, etc.
  • An academic writing sample, this is should be an excellent example of your ability to write a scholarly paper.
  • Write a personal essay in response to the following:

Trace the development of your thinking with respect to psychology as a human science. Emphasize the authors and theories that have had the most impact on your conception of psychology. Discuss how you see the relationship between psychology and cultural diversity.


Applications are due by December 15th. This means the on-line application and all supporting documents must be received in the Graduate Office by December 15th.  It is the responsibility of applicants to verify that their files are fully complete by the deadline dates specified. By April 1, the Department of Psychology will post letters to all applicants informing them as to whether they have been accepted into the graduate program.

Students may reapply to the program only once.
