Before you were born, your whole skeleton was made of cartilage. As you grew, special cells formed your bones using the cartilage as a frame, or scaffold: one kind of cell broke up the cartilage, while another kind of cell replaced it with bone. As the new cells settled, blood vessels grew into the new bone, feeding it with, oxygen, calcium and other important nutrients. These nutrients allow bones to do what other living tissues do: break down old tissue and re-grow new tissue. The process of bone renovation does not occur exclusively in young bones. This process occurs on an everyday basis. As bones regenerate, the new soft cells release tiny particles, called proteins, to their environment. The proteins attract calcium and other substances that harden and transform the squishy cells into solid bone.
The environment outside the cells is called Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM), or, the Structure Outside the Cell. It is made up of tiny particles and minerals produced by your body’s cells - mainly proteins like collagen.The Extra Cellular Matrix is what makes your bones strong and hard.
Those special cells that make and re-build bone are always at work - it's the bone renovation process! Even after you are done growing taller, your bones are constantly being renewed by these cells so that they remain strong and healthy.

So if the bones are growing with squishy cells bathed in ECM, they're not like dry solid sticks?
Bones are a Living Tissue! Bones need nutrients and oxygen just like other organs and tissues, and are constantly breaking down and re-growing.
Inside each bone you will find blood vessels that help supply your bones with calcium and other important nutrients to stay strong and healthy. At the center of some of your bones is the bone marrow where new cells are made. The bone marrow is like a marvelous factory for new cells – stem cells - that have the ability to become new blood, brain, bone, and heart cells. In between these two layers of tissue is a light, spongy layer that makes bones lighter for easier movement.
