The Campus to Community Excursion

What goes into forming a community partnership that actually benefits students’ learning and meets the community’s needs?

On the excursion, you will meet community partners onsite at their agencies and hear their thoughts on navigating agency-faculty partnerships, preparing students for partnership and providing service, and mutually discovering the needs that will be served. See our brief video about a previous Excursion experience.

 • Hop on the bus as we navigate various neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, meet community partners onsite at their locations, and explore possible collaborations. See the various forms that service-learning courses have taken.
 • A community facilitator will guide our visitation through the neighborhood. Their experience and expertise will serve as the foundation of our learning as we move from site to site.
 • Representatives from community organizations, such as The Hill House will meet us along the way. Their descriptions of their work in the neighborhood may offer opportunities for future collaboration.
 • Visits to city historic sites like the New Granada Theater in the Hill District will inform our understanding of the rich cultural history of each Pittsburgh neighborhood.
 • There will be opportunities for dialogue with community partners along the way, which may help you understand the kinds of service-learning partnerships that already exist with Duquesne University.
