Cedars Community Hospice

Cedars Community Hospice is an agency with a mission of taking care of people with a life limiting illness and keeping them at their own residence focusing on symptom management not the disease.

Volunteers would visit with patients and their families.  Requirements:  18 yr old, TB test, Criminal Background, and a two (2) hour training

 

Children's Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center (Bloomfield/Garfield)

The Children's Home of Pittsburgh was established in 1893, it is an independent, non-profit licensed organization that promotes the health and well-being of infants and children through services which establish and strengthen the family.

Volunteers would hold/rock babies as needed, along with administrative office duties. Pre-requisite: 18 years of age, background check, and child abuse clearance.

 

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (Oakland)

CHP has a goal of transforming the lives of children through science and compassion. The vision is to be the world leader in children's health. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of children through excellence in patient care, teaching, and research.

Volunteers are needed for direct-care interaction with patients and families. Indirect care- greeting and escorting visitors, assisting departments with mailings and communications. An application must be filled out along with 2 references, an interview will be conducted and clearances must be completed such as, criminal background check and child abuse, a TB test, an assignment description and training schedule will be given.

 

CLASS (United Cerebral Palsy)

CLASS supports individuals with disabilities in developing skills needed to be active in their community. We also offer attendant care services and services that work with families with children who have disabilities promoting inclusion.

Volunteers will assist in community skills, building classes, assisting staff in clerical work, tutoring adults on basic computer use, adapted art classes and basic academic skills. Pre-requisite: Recent physical, TB screening, Child Abuse Clearance and Criminal Background Check.

 

Family Hospice and Palliative Care (South Hills)

Family Hospice and Palliative Care is one of the first not-for-profit hospices in Pittsburgh. Today, we are the largest not-for-profit in the region, it serves communities in eleven counties in Western Pennsylvania. Our mission is to provide compassionate, quality comfort care that enhances the lives of the people with life limiting illness and their families. The population we serve is anyone with a life limiting illness.

Volunteers will be trained to be a supportive presence with our patients and families, along with supporting office staff and organized activities. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age and attend 12 hour training. 

 

Global Links (Bloomfield/Garfield/Friendship)

Global Links is an organization that uses volunteers to recover surplus medical materials from U.S. hospitals and makes it available to hospitals that serve the poorest member of society in developing countries.

Volunteers will sort and pack medical supplies for shipment overseas, cleaning and prepping medical furnishings like beds, bedside tables, waiting room chairs, etc. Pre-requisite: Closed toed shoes must be worn and 18 yrs old.

 

Magee-Women's Hospital (Oakland)

Magee-Women's Hospital is a women's and infants hospital, as well as, the medical and surgical unit, along with OB services, neonatal, intensive care and ortho units.

Volunteers will interact with patients, discharging of patients, providing basic information to family members in the surgical services department, work within the neonatal intensive care unit, among other departments. Pre-requisites: Must be 18 years of age, orientation, background check, child abuse clearances and TB test.

 

Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh (now affiliated with UPMC) (Uptown)

Mercy Hospital is an acute care facility dedicated to compassionate care of the sick, suffering and dying. Mercy serves the needs of all patients in in-patient and out-patient settings in a number one rank trauma facility.

Volunteers may be placed in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, the Emergency Room, and Same Day Surgery, as well as, other office areas and departments. Pre-requisite: Must be 18 years old, orientation, training, immunization record and TB test.

 

Rx Council

This organization assists low income individuals to gain access to no-cost and low-cost medications. Volunteers are needed to assist with annual special events, clerical tasks, newsletter production, and web site production. 

 

Trinity Hospice (Forest Hills)

Trinity Hospice is a community based organization that affirms the belief that it is important to make every life as meaningful as possible, from the first days of a life-limiting illness to the last.

Volunteers will assist with direct patient care such as talking, assisting them, knitting/crocheting lap quilts for our patients, bereavement phone calls, calling our low level risk families. Pre-requisite: Training, Drug and TB test paid for by Trinity. 

 

UPMC Cancer Center (Shadyside)

UPMC Cancer Center provides comprehensive cancer services to an adult population. The services provided include: diagnosis, treatment, prevention and early detection, and behavioral medicine and support. Ground-breaking research also takes place at our facility.

Volunteers will assist in patient and family support, administrative support, laboratory research, healing powers of the arts and special events. Pre-requisite: Age Requirement, Orientation, Training period, Background Check, and Child Abuse Clearances.

 

UPMC Mercy Hospital Volunteer Services (Uptown)

UPMC Mercy's mission as a Catholic Hospital is to provide compassionate care to the sick, the suffering and the dying and to be a healing presence among those we serve. Our hospital is an acute care trauma center in the uptown region of Pittsburgh; but we serve patients throughout the Western PA region.

Volunteer opportunities are based on their majors, their interests and requirements, and current openings available. Placements are determined at the time of personal interview. Prerequisite: 18 yrs old, Personal Interview, Orientation and specific Orientation to department placement, TB Test, copy of Immunization Record, Background check and all Clearances are required if working with children.

 

UPMC Senior Communities (14 different sites)

UPMC Senior Communities is an organization that offers a wide array of programs and services to our residents. Helping them to stay engaged instead of aged is important to the vitality of all of our communities. A key part of that engagement is providing opportunities for our residents, their families and friends, to donate their time, ideas, and energy through the dynamic volunteer program.

Volunteers would assist in escorting a resident to the doctors, teaching a ceramics class, leading a sing-a-long, or whatever interest or talent, we have many ways for you to get involved. Also assisting in medical records and rehabilitation departments. Pre-requisite: Interview, Orientation, and a Criminal Background check.

 

UPMC Shadyside (Shadyside)

UPMC Shadyside's mission is providing exemplary patient care, outstanding education of healthcare professionals and advanced biomedical research.

Volunteers are needed for clerical duties, customer service, transport of patients and patient relations. Pre-requisite: Age Requirement, Orientation, Training period, and a Background Check.

 

Western Pennsylvania Hospital (Bloomfield)

West Penn Hospital is a 512 bed hospital located next to Shadyside in Bloomfield. Patients are from newborn to elderly. It is known for its Burn Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas: Emergency Room and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Pre-requisite: Age Requirement, Orientation, Background Check.
