Self Care Competition
Mylan School of Pharmacy
The Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy student chapter of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association - Allegheny County Pharmacists Association (PPA-ACPA) held its annual Self-Care Competition on January 8, 2014 in the Pappert Lecture Hall of the Bayer Learning Center on the Duquesne University campus.
Sponsored by Giant Eagle Corporation, the competition is a cross between "Jeopardy," "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," and "Hometown High-Q." In this forum, student teams of three are challenged with questions relative to over-the-counter medications, herbals, and self-care. This year, nine student pharmacist teams competed with additional student pharmacist observers serving as "poll the audience" participants. Members of the faculty, as well as School of Pharmacy residents and fellows, generated categories and questions for the competition and further served as judges, scorekeepers, and timekeepers. John DeJames, Clinical Programs and Special Projects pharmacist coordinator with Giant Eagle Corporation, served as the competition moderator. More than 50 faculty, staff, and students were in attendance.
As members of the winning team, Michael Schontz, William Trombatt,, and Janelle Hestin advanced to the state-wide competition held at the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Mid-Year Meeting on Friday, January 24 2014,in Bedford Springs, PA.
"The self-care competition demonstrated how capable our future pharmacists, cultivated by the excellent pharmacy schools in Pennsylvania, will be in providing unparalleled patient counseling, which is a clear focal point in pharmacy for years to come," said Ross McDevitt, Class of 2015.
The Duquesne University team was joined by 20 additional students, faculty, fellows, and residents from the School who contributed to four poster presentations and two continuing education presentations at the weekend conference. Ashley Adams, Benjamin Andrick, Rachel Marini, and Jordan Moore also participated in the "Know Pain, Know Gain Pharmacy Patient Counseling Competition" with Benjamin Andrick finishing among the top three finalists.
