Software and Applications
Apple recently announced the release of its newest operating system, macOS Big Sur. At this time, Computing and Technology Services (CTS) will have limited to no support for core University software and services on devices running macOS Big Sur. Therefore, CTS does not recommend upgrading to macOS Big Sur.
CTS is working with the University's software vendors and testing our campus technologies on macOS Big Sur. As support for macOS Big Sur becomes available, we will update this webpage.
Overview
Computing and Technology Services (CTS) licenses and supports several software products for Duquesne students, faculty and staff. Employee software support includes updates and patches for operating systems and supported software titles.

* Adobe will stop updating and distributing Flash Player at the end of 2020. Microsoft will remove the ability to run Adobe Flash in Microsoft Edge, including Microsoft Edge built on Chromium, and Internet Explorer across all supported versions of Microsoft Windows. Users will no longer have the ability to enable or run Flash. Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have also announced they will not support Flash in browsers.
** With changes made in Oracle Java licensing, users are now required to purchase Java through the Computer Store if needed to run applications. We encourage users to review Java OpenJDK as an alternative to Oracle Java.
*** MacOS Catalina no longer supports 32-bit applications. Upgrading to macOS Catalina may cause some existing applications on your device to stop functioning.
Employee software support levels
CTS will give best effort to resolve all software issues for employees. The CTS Help Desk will provide troubleshooting for most software issues at no cost. For software issues that cannot be resolved by the Help Desk, tickets will be escalated to CTS Technicians for further troubleshooting. The average turnaround time for tickets assigned to CTS technicians is between one and three business days.
Software Support Levels | |
Manufacturer Support | The software vendor will provide incident support, security updates, and nonsecurity hotfixes. The mainstream support dates in the charts below are the vendor's published lifecycle support dates. If the vendor does not publish their lifecycle support dates, the date will be based on the vendor's past support lifecycle history. |
CTS Support | CTS Support is based on the vendor's support lifecycle. CTS will provide sufficient notice through this webpage if a piece of software is nearing the end of its support lifecycle. In some cases, CTS may provide extended support for a piece of software that exceeds the manufacturer's lifecycle. Extended support may include limited or no network access. |
Employee software support: Windows OS
Operating systems, software and browsers
CTS tries to follow Microsoft's mainstream support lifecycle as closely as possible but will work with employees to support software that falls outside those parameters. The list below highlights the Support Lifecycle for the operating systems, software, and browsers that Microsoft offers, and lists their respective End of Support dates.

Employee software support: macOS
Operating systems, software and browsers
Apple does not publish the support lifecycle for its operating systems, but new macOS (formerly OS X) versions usually launch during the 3rd quarter of the year. Therefore, CTS will follow Apple's support model of supporting the three latest macOS versions and discontinue support for any operating system versions outside of this window at the beginning of each new year.
