The Mary Pappert School of Music and its City Music Center successfully hosted seven weeks of immersive summer music-making experiences for Pittsburgh youth in grades 7-12. Camp activities ranged from Jazz Ensembles and Music Technology labs to instrumental boot camps for both brass and strings. Participants worked alongside MPSOM faculty to sharpen music skills, prepare concerts and present portfolios, all while making new friends and memories here on Duquesne's beautiful campus.

Beginning in late June, students from around the region gathered on campus for our Summer Jazz Experience, making music in both big band and small group settings.

Program Director of Jazz Studies, Mike Tomaro said, "The Jazz Experience is a fantastic opportunity for these students to study the jazz idiom, for sure, but even more than that, they get that information and instruction from a truly amazing group of jazz musicians–some of the finest artists I've ever had the pleasure to work with."

The jazz camp was followed by two weeks of music technology camps and focused on learning principles of audio engineering, mixing and mastering, electronic music composition, and multimedia production.

Capping off the Summer Music Series were two performance-based camps, the Steel City Brass Camp and the Violin and Viola Boot Camp. Focusing more on instrumental development, these camps both featured prominent Pittsburgh musicians, including members of the GRAMMY Award-winning Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Ballet and Opera Orchestras.

CMC Director, Tom Carsecka, is already hard at work planning next year's series. "These camps provide music-making experiences that are second to none. You just can't do any better than our wonderful array of faculty artists who love to work with these students–so much so that they're all are already asking me about next summer! I'd recommend that everyone stay tuned to our website [duq.edu/SummerMusicSeries] for those details as they develop."
