Chamber music includes strings, woodwinds, brass, and mixed instrumentation ensembles (including strings, percussion and wind instruments). These ensembles provide necessary and valuable experience for the performance major. Coached by School of Music faculty, including members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, these ensembles rehearse and perform on campus and at community service locations throughout the Pittsburgh area.
Triano Woodwind Quintet
James Gorton, coach
The Mary Pappert School of Music is seeking five exceptionally motivated and talented performers to become part of a pre-professional chamber music experience:
Students refine their performance and musicianship skills by playing in this highly talented chamber music ensemble coached by artist members of the renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Members of the group also serve as ambassadors of the Mary Pappert School of Music through various concerts and competitions throughout the country!
The Triano Woodwind Quintet was established to offer graduate-level scholarship opportunity to highly qualified (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon) students who are focusing on a career in musical performance. Members of the Triano Quintet receive full-tuition remission.
Frances DeBroff Graduate String Quartet
Charles Stegeman, coach
The Frances DeBroff Graduate String Quartet was formed in August 2010, at Duquesne University. As individuals, the players have participated in master classes with the Biava Quartet, The Juilliard Baroque Ensemble, and the Orion Quartet. Some summer festivals, which members have attended, include The Quartet Program, Bowdoin Music Festival, and The Viola Workout.
Jazz Chamber Groups
Jazz Chamber groups are trio through sextet in size and typically feature traditional jazz instrumentation. Students learn a working repertoire of standard jazz material and, along with the instructor, create arrangements specific for their group. Original student compositions can be developed over the course of the semester and are welcomed for all groups.
The jazz chamber groups perform on and off campus each year. These groups have been featured annually on the Music on the Mount series, a free series of concerts hosted by the Mary Pappert School of Music and St. Mary of the Mount Parish on Mt. Washington.
