Western PA Partnerships and Outreach

We serve communities throughout western Pennsylvania, with a special focus on the neighborhoods bordering our campus.

UPTOWN

Uptown is home to Pittsburgh flagships like Duquesne University, UPMC Mercy and PPG Paints Arena. The Fifth-Forbes corridor, connecting the Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland knowledge hubs, is poised for redevelopment.

In addition to neighborhood clean-up days, attendance at community meetings and regular outreach to Uptown residents, our leadership roles in the EcoInnovation District and Uptown Task Force facilitate sustainable redevelopment of the neighborhood and support current residents' needs.

SOUTH SIDE

The path to Pittsburgh's South Side from campus—across the Duquesne Walkway and down the steps to the 10th Street Bridge—is one all Duquesne students know. It's a popular neighborhood for commuter housing, and our South Side residents regularly participate in community cleanups and volunteer at organizations like the Carnegie Library and the Brashear Association.

As a member of the South Side Chamber of Commerce, we take our role as responsible neighbors seriously and are committed to the neighborhood's growth.

HILL DISTRICT

The historic Hill District—once home to greats like Lena Horne, August Wilson, Satchel Paige and Charles "Teenie" Harris—is just blocks from campus and in the midst of a revitalization. It's also home to the Duquesne University Pharmacy, which serves the wellness needs of Hill District residents.

Since 2011 we've partnered with the August Wilson House, the playwright's Hill District childhood home, which is being restored to honor his legacy and serve as a community arts center. Supported by a $100,000 grant from the Nancy Jones Beard Foundation, Duquesne will host the initial August Wilson House Fellowships, a three-year program allowing scholars and artists of color to advance their work and serve the joint interests of the University and the community.

HAZELWOOD

Duquesne University has a longstanding presence in Hazelwood, a former steel town now ready for a resurgence. We serve on the board of Hazelwood Center of Life, which provides the community with rich academic out-of-school programs and experiences in music and arts.

MON VALLEY

We are in the early stages of expanding Duquesne's community engagement work to the Mon Valley. Through collaborations with elected officials and community leaders, we're scheduling a series of listening sessions and community tours to determine neighborhood strengths, areas of opportunity and a best course of action.
