DU School Psychology Professor Earns National Recognition
Dr. Tammy Hughes, associate professor in Duquesne University’s school psychology program in the School of Education, received the President's Award for Outstanding Service to Children from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The award was presented during the NASP’s annual convention in Boston on Feb. 27.
Hughes, who serves as president of the Division of School Psychology-American Psychological Association (APA), was recognized for her work and collaborative efforts among national associations to find solutions to social problems that children face.
“There is no greater honor than being acknowledged by your peers for your work,” Hughes said. “I am especially proud of the coordinated efforts between NASP and Division 16 of the APA to help children, parents and teachers build healthy and safe environments. Parents who have questions about their child's academic and/or social development should reach out to their local school psychologist—every family has access to one!”
Besides her leadership in the American Psychological Association, Hughes serves as co-chair of the School Psychology Leadership Roundtable and is a past president of Trainers of School Psychologists. She also is on the school psychology board of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association.
Hughes is the author and co-author of many books, articles and publications on child violence, emotional disturbances and conduct problems in children. Her work includes assessment, counseling and consultation services for youth in schools in juvenile justice settings.
Hughes received her Ph.D. in school psychology from Arizona State University and her M.A. in clinical psychology from St. Mary’s University.
