Duquesne’s Pursuing Purpose Retreat Helps Students Discover Vocation
To help students reflect on ways to have successful careers while also creating meaning and purpose in their lives, Duquesne's McAnulty College of Liberal Arts, in collaboration with the University's Office of Career Services and Spiritan Campus Ministry, are hosting Pursuing Purpose, a day-long vocational retreat, on Saturday, Feb. 11.
"Our hope is that students, at the end of the retreat, will have a deeper sense of how their career plans might also reflect their search for meaning in life and the values that are part of the Duquesne mission of service," said Dr. Coralyn McCauley, a career services counselor for the liberal arts, who is helping to coordinate the retreat.
Through guided reflection, talks from speakers and scripture readings, students will have an opportunity to consider how their major and career might fit with their spirituality and life course.
"A career is your job-what you do to make a living-but it might not have a strong spiritual component," McCauley explained. "A vocation is how to create meaning, how to make a difference in the world. Putting those two together is what makes this program unique."
Pursuing Purpose is a component of the voluntary, co-curricular Finding My Vocation certificate, a set of 12 career-related, professional, disciplinary and experiential learning activities liberal arts students can engage in at any time and in any order during their time at Duquesne Universitys. The certificate helps students integrate classroom studies and career exploration with their aspirations to make a difference in the world.
While Finding My Vocation is open only to liberal arts students at Duquesne, the Pursuing Purpose retreat is free and open to all majors across the University.
