Why Consider a M.S.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Duquesne?

Description: The Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is comprised of 60 credits and is accredited by the Council for Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Types of Employment: Graduates of the program may obtain employment in the following areas:
• Community mental health centers;
• Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers;
• Career counseling centers;
• Mobile therapists;
• Family Based Mental Health therapists;
• Outpatient therapists;
• Behavioral specialists consultants (BSC);
• Probation/parole officers.

Licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC): Graduates of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program satisfy the academic requirements for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) and National Counseling Certification (NCC). The primary requirements for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania include 1) a master's degree of at least 48 graduate credits, 2) a total of 60 graduate credits, 3) 700 hours of fieldwork, 4) passing one of 4 approved national exams, one of which is the National Counselor Exam (NCE), and 5) 3,000 hours of supervised experience under a qualified supervisor. Employment Outlook: According to the Department of Labor (DOL) projections, there is expected to be a much faster than average (14%) increase in the number of mental health counselor positions by the year 2024.

Financial Aid: Students receive a 25% scholarship towards tuition if they take 6 credits per semester. Many students obtain student loans (federal or private). Students apply for loans through the Financial Aid Office / 412-396-6607.

Graduate Assistant Positions: Duquesne's Counselor Education Program does not have GA positions for master's students, but master's students may apply for graduate assistant and employment positions throughout the university.
