Biology Major Pre-Medical Mentoring
Although students may enter the health professional fields (e.g., medicine, dentistry, optometry, PT, OT, PA, etc.) from a variety of majors, there are several reasons why biology is a great choice for students desiring to gain acceptance into health professional schools.
First, biology majors represent more than half of all students accepted into medical schools1, as well as a high proportion of students entering the allied health professions. Second, there are a number of biology courses that focus specifically on the functions of living organisms, including humans. These include classes in cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, physiology, endocrinology, neuroscience and genetics. Finally, the biology department offers ample opportunities for students to gain biomedical research experiences. The biology major is an ideal environment for students to begin their pre-medical and allied health development.
