Bio

Dr. Mary Frances Grasinger is a Sister of St. Joseph of Baden, Pennsylvania and a Professor of Education Administration in the School of Education at Duquesne University, where she teaches administration and management and curriculum courses. She graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor's degree in education, math and social studies and holds a master's degree in the teaching of math and physics from the Catholic University of America. She received her Ph.D. from Syracuse University in educational administration and supervision.

Dr. Grasinger taught 19 years in elementary and secondary education. During this time, she also taught courses at various colleges and universities. She served as a vice-principal for four years and is certified in both and states of New York and Pennsylvania to be a superintendent of schools.

She received nine National Science Foundations study grants and served for one year as a curriculum implementation specialist in math, science, and social studies through a NSF Program at Syracuse University. While pursuing doctoral work, Dr. Grasinger was employed by the Central New York School Study Council and School Board Institute engaged in providing in-service conferences for school superintendents, teachers, and school board members. Her dissertation was in educational law researching the reduction in force in Pennsylvania and New York. Her research interests are in preparation of school administrators, curriculum and instruction.

A particular interest of Dr. Grasinger is the encouragement of young women, particularly minority women, to enter careers in science and mathematics. Dr. Grasinger was a charter member of the Pittsburgh Chapter Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics and served as chair of the Workshops Committee from 1988 to 1993. This group held an annual conference in Pittsburgh to provide the opportunity for students to meet and form personal contacts with women in math and science related fields.

Dr. Grasinger has served the Duquesne University School of Education as Associate Dean for Graduate Education from 1983-1991 and Program Director of Secondary Education. In 1989 she served the School of Education as Interim Dean. From 1980 to 1995 she was Duquesne University Co-Liaison to the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. In 1991, Dr. Grasinger was a Fulbright-Hayes Scholar in a Group Project to Hungary. In 1988, she received the Duquesne University President's Award for Excellence in University Service. She has attended and presented at state, national and international conferences in the United States, Canada, and Europe. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute and of Our Lady of The Sacred Heart High School Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. She was the first President of the Board of Directors of Mt. Gallitzin Academy of Baden, Pennsylvania and was appointed Director Emerita. She currently serves as a member of the Education Committee of Girls Hope of Pittsburgh and Board Member of The Providence Heights Alpha School.
