Travel with students from other U.S. institutions; study with local and international students. Third-party provider, Institute for Study Abroad-Butler University (IFSA-Butler), facilitated by Duquesne University’s OIP.
Courses
- All students are required to take Advanced Spanish language (4 cr.) offered by IFSA Butler.
- San Jose offers strong literature and social science programs, in addition to many other disciplines.
- Heredia’s top departments include environmental studies, ecology, Latin American studies, sociology, economics and business.
- Intermediate program available in Heredia.
Language of Instruction
Integrated program: Spanish; requires minimum of four semesters of college-level Spanish.
Intermediate program: Spanish; requires 2-3 semesters of university-level Spanish or equivalent.

Housing and Meals
IFSA-Butler houses all students in homestays with carefully selected and screened Costa Rican families. This includes three meals per day.
Services Provided
IFSA-Butler provides a complete infrastructure of residential and academic support. A resident director is on site at each location, and facilitates every aspect of your semester: a three-week language-intensive orientation, housing, excursions, language and tutorial support, etc.
