Safety Programs
The Duquesne University Department of
Public Safety offers a variety of ongoing programs
designed to educate and sensitize members of the
community to crime prevention and safety issues,
particularly the recognition and appraisal of
a crime risk and the most effective protective
measures. These are offered for residence hall
groups, new student orientations, student interest
groups and employee training programs.
Personal safety and self-protection
programs are offered to suggest risk reduction
strategies in a residential environment and while
walking, driving or while using public transportation.
Educational programs are also offered dealing
with rape awareness and avoidance (including acquaintance
rape), drug and alcohol abuse, driving under the
influence, vacation safety and personal property
protection. A variety of pamphlets, brochures
and posters are used to supplement these programs.
Any individual or group interested in attending
or scheduling a program is invited to contact
the University Police at 412-396-4675.
A summary of reported crimes
is published weekly in the student newspaper to
keep the community informed of the types of situations
that occur. Also, special notices are published
in a timely manner to publicize violent crimes
or perceived patterns of crime in a particular
area, to heighten awareness and help prevent recurrences.
First Aid/CPR Classes
The Department of Public Safety has four (4) American
Red Cross First Aid/CPR Instructors on staff.
If your sorority, fraternity or other group or
organization is interested in this service, you
may contact Assistant Director Nick Okopal at
extension 6002 or Lt. Lee Speer at extension 4935.
Card Access
The card access system is currently being used
in all Academic buildings on campus as well
as all of the Residence Halls. It is designed
to give access to authorized persons and to
document the date and time the card was used
as well as the location used. Twenty-four hour
access to Academic Buildings must be first approved
by the Dean or Department Head. Questions concerning
card access may be directed to the Director
of Public Safety by email or X6007.
Campus Escort Service
The Duquesne University Public Safety
Department provides campus wide only, 24 hour
Escort Service to all members of the Duquesne
University community. The Escort Service is designed
to enhance your safety and peace of mind if you
must work after dark. The primary goal of the
Escort Service is to enable you to travel from
one location to another with a greater sense of
security. The Escort Service is intended to be
primarily a walking service with mobile escort
provided when determined to be appropriate.
Escorts will be provided by
either a Campus Security Officer or a Campus Police
Officer. All Security and Police Personnel carry
radios, identification and will be in some type
of designated Security or Police uniform. All
Security and Police Personnel are trained in First
Aid and CPR.
Call 396-6002 anytime to arrange
for an escort. It is not necessary to call in
advance, as escorts are on duty and ready to be
dispatched as needed.
Code Blue Emergency
Service
The Code Blue is a stand-alone interactive
voice security station with integrated area lighting
and interactive voice technology. The System is
designed so that when the single button is pushed

after establishing the phone connection with the

send a signal to the Campus Police indicating
the location of the activated station. Once the
system is activated it allows you to have hands
free communication directly with the Campus Police.
Code Blue phones are located at the following
areas:
- Bluff Street near Rooney Field
- Locust Circle near Gumberg Library
- Shingiss Street at Rockwell Hall
- Gibbon Street at Magee Street by the rear
