Community Activities
These Duquesne departments coordinate service opportunities and promote community engagement.
Spiritan Campus Ministry
Faithful to the Spiritan missionary charism, the Spiritan Campus Ministry helps students find a role within the community and provide for those less fortunate. Students formulate their values and beliefs about God and the world around them as they serve the poor and the marginalized, and offer hope to those less fortunate than ourselves. We foster an atmosphere of respect among a diversity of faith traditions.
To provide service opportunities through a faith-based perspective, contact us through the Campus Ministry web site.
Duquesne University Volunteers (DUV)
DUV coordinates volunteer opportunities between community organizations and any individual or group seeking to volunteer at Duquesne. DUV seeks to make community service a vital part of the DU experience by fostering lifelong commitments to service, civic engagement and social justice.
- It offers the opportunity for student groups, lettered organizations, faculty, staff, administration and alumni to build moral character and strength through specifically designed service opportunities.
- DUV also assists community organizations in the procurement of in-kind donations and a variety of philanthropic endeavors for the campus community.
If you are in need of committed volunteers, or other services, please talk to us about your needs and visit the DUV Web site.
Office of Service-Learning
“Service-Learning is the embodiment of the Spiritan Charism in academic courses.”
Service-Learning unites faculty, community partners and students in community-based learning activities and shows students how knowledge can have practical applications outside the classroom. It also coordinates the Community Engagement Scholars program, in which students assist with community partnerships, research projects, service-learning courses, or other efforts.
As a community partner, you will work with the Office of Service-Learning to form reciprocal relationships with Duquesne faculty and students.
Through service-learning, students will provide services to your clients while improving their own skills in medical, therapeutic, educational or other fields. Our students also give tutoring, musical instruction or technology instruction.
Community partners have several options. You can:
- Ask instructors to incorporate specific services when they plan courses
- Enter into partnerships with existing service-learning courses (already providing services to other community partners)
- Work with individual students to develop independent service-learning projects.
Contact us for more information and current service-learning opportunities through the Service Learning web site.
