Full-Time Faculty and Staff
The ESL Program employs experienced professionals with substantial backgrounds in international education, applied linguistics, and methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). The faculty includes master's and doctoral-level teachers who are skilled in assisting international students with language development, cross-cultural learning, and adjustment to life and study at a U.S. university.
Dr. Susan Todhunter

Dr. Susan Todhunter joined the ESL Program as Director in May, 2011. She earned a Ph.D. in Education from the Department of Instruction and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her M.A. degree in Linguistics with TESOL Certification at the University of Pittsburgh and her Bachelor's degree in Russian Language and Literature from Franklin and Marshall College. Dr. Todhunter has taught English in the United States and in Spain, Russia and South Korea. Her professional interests focus on the ways that teachers support their students' learning through classroom interaction.
Dr. Jona E. Hammer

Dr. Jona E. Hammer joined the Duquesne University ESL Program in 1987 and serves as Associate Director. She received her Ph.D. degree from the Department of English at Duquesne University, her M.A. degree with TESOL Certification at the University of Pittsburgh, and her B.A. degree from Smith College. Her professional interests have focused on curriculum design, instruction and assessment of written English and competencies required for students’ successful transition to undergraduate composition and literature courses. Dr. Hammer has presented results of her work at regional and national TESOL and literary professional conferences.
Ms. Cynthia Lennox

Ms. Cynthia Lennox joined the Duquesne University ESL Program faculty in 2000 and serves as Student Activities Coordinator. She received her M.A. degree in English from Carnegie-Mellon University and holds a dual B.A. degree and Certification in French and English from Washington and Jefferson University. Her professional interests have focused on curriculum design and instruction related to speaking-listening, Business English, and intercultural education. Ms. Lennox has presented results of her work at regional and national TESOL conferences.
Ms. Kathy Barnard

Kathleen Barnard joined the ESL Program faculty in 2008. She earned an M.A. in TESOL at the University of Alabama and a B.S. in Elementary Education at Armstrong State College. Her current professional interests include curriculum design, instruction and assessment of student competencies in grammar and cross-cultural education. She has presented at local and regional TESOL conferences.
