Transfer Students
Students may apply for transfer admission to the Law School, but applicants should be aware that the school accepts very few transfer students, and in some years, no transfers are admitted. Applicants for admission to a class other than the first year who have begun the study of law at another school must meet all regular requirements for admission to the first-year program, along with several other stipulations.
Requirements
Transfer applicants must present satisfactory evidence of having been in regular attendance at an ABA-approved law school, and must be in good standing and unconditionally eligible to return to studies at that school.
Before a transfer application will be considered the applicant must have completed the equivalent course requirements of a first year Day Division student at the Duquesne University School of Law.
Application Procedure
Transfer applicants must meet all requirements for a first-year student and must submit the standard application and $60 fee along with the following:
- A Credential Assembly Service from the LSAC (a copy from the current law school is acceptable).
- An official transcript of all completed law school work.
- A letter from the law school attended certifying that the applicant is in good standing and is eligible to return there. The letter should not be written until the student successfully completes all of his or her academic work in which the student is currently enrolled.
Transfer applicants should apply by June 1. Decisions on transfer students are made in mid-July.
Course Credit Transfer Policy
With the approval of the Academic Status Committee, credits earned at another law school will be accepted by the School of Law if certain criteria are satisfied. Grades earned in courses accepted for transfer credit will not be included in the computation of a student’s grade point average.
All of the following criteria must be met before the School of Law will accept transfer credits:
- The credits must be earned at an ABA-accredited law school,
- The grade earned in any course for which transfer credits are sought must be, at a minimum, the equivalent of the School of Law’s passing grade of “C”,
- Upper-level course credits must be for courses that are not included in the School of Law’s curriculum, and,
- No more than twenty-nine (29) transfer credits will be accepted toward satisfaction of the J.D. degree; provided, however, that no student may enroll in more than six (6) summer session elective credits either at the School of Law or at other ABA-accredited law schools.
Duquesne University has an articulation agreement with the University of Pittsburgh which facilitates registration and the transfer of credits between the two institutions. Grades earned in courses taken at the University of Pittsburgh Law School which are accepted for transfer by the School of Law will appear on a student’s transcript, but the grade will not be included in the computation of a student’s grade point average. Grades earned in courses accepted for transfer credit from other accredited law schools will not appear on a student’s transcript, but transfer credits will be shown.
