Health and Safety
At Duquesne, safety is a top priority. The Department of Public Safety offers these crime prevention services to keep students safe and the campus secure:
- Highly trained, sworn University police officers who patrol campus and adjacent streets on foot, and by patrol cars and bicycle units.
- Direct radio contact with Pittsburgh police and paramedics
- 24/7 campus emergency line: 412.396.COPS (2677)
- Secure ID card access for building security
- Code Blue interactive voice security stations
- Campus safety escorts
Emergencies
DU Emergency Alert is an automated mass notification system that sends a text message to students' cell phones.
Weather emergencies and class cancellations are announced on the Weather Information hotline: 412.396.1700.
Health Resources
Health Service
The Health Service is located on the second floor of the Duquesne Union. A staff of qualified nurses, nurse practitioners and a physician evaluates and treats illness and injury for all registered full-time students.
The Health Service operates on an appointment basis, except for emergencies, Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday until 5 p.m. Call 412.396.1650 for an appointment.
For after-hours care, resident students should call the front desk of their Living Learning Center for assistance, or call 412.692.5325, identify themselves as a Duquesne student, and ask for the Adolescent Medicine physician on call.
Health Insurance
It is a policy of Duquesne University that all full time students have health insurance coverage. Students must provide proof of health insurance or purchase one of the two health insurance plans offered by the University. For additional information, call 1.800.791.9420 or 412.396.6677.
University Counseling Center
The Counseling Center (Administration Building, 412.396.6204) provides:
- Free and confidential counseling services
- Short or long-term treatment
- Personal, group and couples counseling
- Crisis management
Drug and Alcohol Education
DU CARES (412.396.5834) teaches students basic information about alcohol and other drugs. The staff also:
- Refers students to appropriate services if alcohol or other drugs become a problem
- Assists students in recovery
- Provides suggestions on how to maintain a low-risk, healthy lifestyle
Sexual Integrity
Catholic teaching has described human sexuality as a wonderful gift from God which carries a significant measure of responsibility. Duquesne encourages students to learn about sexual integrity.
