Academic Research Center for Pharmacy Care
Director: Christine K. O'Neil, Pharm.D, BCPS, FCCP

The Center for Pharmacy Care, established in October 2002, provides wellness, disease prevention and medication therapy management focusing no hypertension, dyslipedemia, diabetes and osteoporosis. The programs currently are available to the University community and to the public in the surrounding Pittsburgh/Allegheny County community.   The Center serves as a teaching site for student pharmacist experiential education. In conjunction with the Pharmaceutical Information Center, the Center publishes Well Aware, a bimonthly newsletter featuring articles on health and wellness.

The Center serves includes Health Promotion/Wellness Services, Duquesne sponsored events; Living My Life Diabetes Self-Management Program; Immunization Services; Spirit of Health Initiatives; A Medication Management Source for Physician’s Office; and Pharmacists Preceptor Development Program.

Academic Research Center for Pharmacy Practice
Coordinator: Marsha McFalls, Pharm.D.

The goal of the Center for Pharmacy Practice is to provide an environment for pharmacy students to integrate, reinforce, and enhance student learning. This is accomplished by demonstrating how lecture material in a classroom is related to actual pharmacy practice state-of-the-art technology, prescription, nonprescription, and herbal medications, and Center exercises relevant to classes in the professional curriculum, to facilitate the achievement of this goal. The Center for Pharmacy Practice also serves as a site for various classes and electives, educational lectures, training, and the Pharmacist Refresher course and competency testing of student pharmacists.

Academic Research Pharmaceutical Information Center
Director: John G. Lech, Pharm.D.

The Pharmaceutical Information Center is a drug information service that provides responses to drug information requests generated by alumni, preceptors, students, faculty, other health care providers and the public. The Center serves as an experiential education site for Doctor of Pharmacy students and maintains a core library of reference texts, periodicals, and electronic resources for use by faculty and students of the School of Pharmacy. The Center receives questions on drug interactions on safe and effective drug use, and use during breast feeding and pregnancy and adverse drug effects
The hours of operation of the Center are: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; daily operations are based on the University calendar.

Academic Research Center for Continuing Dental Education
Director: Michael E. Mermigas, RPh, DDS

The Center for Continuing Dental Education to help dental professionals get accurate, up-to-date information about the latest pharmacology trends and therapies impacting their patients. As Western Pennsylvania’s only school of pharmacy offering pharmacology education for dental professionals, we provide them with the knowledge that is essential for safe and effective dental treatment of patients with complex medical histories. The Mylan School of Pharmacy has been designated an approved program provider by the Pennsylvania constituent of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). As such, this program provider’s continuing education units (CEU) are accepted by the AGD for credit applicable toward membership maintenance and Fellowship/Mastership Credit.

Center for Biotechnology

The Center for Biotechnology promotes the innovative development and application of biotechnology through an interdisciplinary, coordinated research effort across the University. It provides an impetus for connectivity while increasing interactions between the research faculty and both other research universities and the biomedical industry stressing translational as well as basic research.

Chronic Pain Initiative and The Center for Excellence in Education of Pain and Palliative Care
Coordinator: Hildegarde J. Berdine, Pharm.D., BCPS
The Mylan School of Pharmacy, in cooperation with other Duquesne University Departments, established an interdisciplinary chronic pain team. The team composed of various professionals from pharmacy, nursing, human resources, physician assistants, music therapy, physical therapy, psychology, and the clergy. The Center utilizes the resources of the University to improve the quality of life for people suffering with pain and for their family members through an interdisciplinary effort focusing on healing of mind, body, and spirit. The team receives requests from the university community for help with chronic pain. Team members provide counsel, support, and information for the individual with pain, and their family or caregivers. Our goal is to reintroduce hope into their lives. Referrals are made to other professionals in the community with specialized expertise in chronic pain management. Clinical pharmacy faculty offer continuing education programs for practicing health care professionals in the area of pain management pharmacist and palliative care. The team involves student pharmacists Pharmacy Practice Residents and Fellows as members of this interdisciplinary model of care.

Duquesne Center for Pharmaceutical Technology
Director: James K. Drennen III, Ph.D.

The Duquesne University Center for Pharmaceutical Technology (DCPT) focuses on the advancement of pharmaceutical manufacturing through the application of appropriate technologies for the improvement of safety, quality and efficiency throughout the pharmaceutical industry. DCPT exists as a focal point for the research interests of faculty and collaborators for the development and scientifically based implementation of pharmaceutical manufacturing technology. It addresses the major issues of regulatory concerns, science based methods validation, and business advantages of technology. Participants (clients and collaborators) in the center include representatives from industry, other academic institutions, regulatory authorities, equipment vendors and private consultants.

Faculty of Specialized Centers for Pharmacy Practice
Director: Hildegarde J. Berdine, Pharm.D., BCPS,
The Clinical Laboratory operates in conjunction with the Center for Pharmacy Care. The Clinical Laboratory is registered with the Department of Health and Human Services under CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) requirements and with the State of Pennsylvania Department of Health and Bureau of Laboratories. Registration is required to operate instrumentation using a finger stick to obtain a blood sample. The registration is a renewable permit mandating the Clinical Laboratory to maintain ongoing quality assurance of the instrumentation, current policy and procedures, and confidentiality of all client records.
