Samuel J. Hazo Endowed Scholarship Fund

We are fully endowed, but let's keep going!

What is the Samuel J. Hazo Endowed Scholarship Fund?

The Samuel J. Hazo Endowed Scholarship Fund is a joint effort of the alumnae sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Phi Omicron (the name of the original, local sorority that moved onto being the Eta Beta local chapter of the Zeta Tau Alpha national sorority in 1970). We have now achieved the initial $50,000 goal. This perpetual funding will directly support Duquesne University student sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha based on financial need and academic merit. Today, we encourage you to make a donation in honor of the 50 years our chapter has been on Duquesne University's campus. These additional funds will allow us to provide even greater support to those student sisters in need.

Who is Sam Hazo?

This fund honors Sam Hazo, a Duquesne University McAnulty College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus and internationally recognized author, who served for 10 years as advisor to the Omicrons. Spanning six decades and circling the globe, his oeuvre includes poetry, fiction, drama, essays, and various works of translation. He has published more than 50 books that have been translated into numerous languages, and his literary distinctions include The Griffin Award for Creative Writing from the University of Notre Dame and the Maurice English Award for Poetry. His collection of poems Once for the Last Bandit became a National Book Award finalist.

This scholarship enables us to broaden the scope of our direct support to our sisters in good standing at Duquesne. Dr. Hazo lent his name to this fund because, just as he was committed to the Omicrons so many years ago, he remains a supporter of the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha and Greek Life on campus.

Now in his 90s, Sam Hazo is the same vibrant, intelligent and compassionate man so many of us are fortunate to have known and fondly remember. Click here to read more about Sam Hazo.
