Graduate Admissions
Students who hold a bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a related discipline may apply to the six semester Master of Science degree program. Applicants are eligible for direct admission to the graduate program provided they have an undergraduate degree in the discipline (e.g., speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders) that included the course work listed below or if they have earned an undergraduate degree outside the discipline and have completed the following course work or their equivalents:
Introduction to Communication Sciences and Disorders
Normal Speech and Language Development
Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing
Phonetics (IPA transcription)
Speech Science
Introduction to Biostatistics
Introduction to Psychology
To meet national certification requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), prospective graduate students must have completed coursework in: biological science, physical science, social science, and mathematics (statistics preferred).
Applicants seeking Pennsylvania teacher certification also must have completed special education courses equivalent to GSPED 611: Persons with Disabilities and GSPED 663: Educational Assessment: Special Education. These courses can be completed as overloads during the first two semesters of graduate study.
Duquesne's SLP program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Our teacher certification program has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the National Council For Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Application to Duquesne University's SLP program is a three step process
First, applicants mush complete the on-line centeralized application. To be complete an applicant must fill out an on-line application form and submit to CSDCAS ALL college/university transcripts, letters of recommendations, and a personal statement. Additionally, all fees must be paid to CSDCAS.
Second, applicants must complete a free supplemental Duquesne University application. This supplemental application should take no more than five minutes to complete. Please do not complete the supplemental application until after you have completed the CSDCAS application, have requested that transcripts and letters of recommendation be sent to CSDCAS and have paid the required fees to CSDCAS. The supplemental application allows us to process the CSDCAS application. There are a couple of important points for you to remember. When asked which term (semester) you are applying for indicate ‘Fall’; that is the only semester the SLP program starts. Also, if you are applying to the SLP two-year graduate program, indicate 'Graduate' when asked. The SLP Post-Bacc(alaureate) program is for applicants who will not have completed the required pre-professional course work at the end of the current academic year.
Third, have official GRE scores sent by ETS to Duquesne University (#2196). An application is not complete until all three steps have been completed: (1) submit an application to CSDCAS including all transcripts, letters of recommendation, and fees paid; (2) submit a supplemental application to Duquesne University; and, (3) official GRE scores are received by Duquesne University.
The CSDCAS deadline for Duquesne University is April 15, 2011. This is the last date when an applicant can submit their on-line application. If an applicant does not submit their on-line application prior to the deadline, they will not be able to apply to our program. PLEASE NOTE that the CSDCAS deadline has nothing to do with transcripts or letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit their transcripts and LOR's within approximately two weeks of the deadline else they will not be processed.
Applications that are totally complete by January 20th will be considered for the first round of offers which will be made in early-to-mid March. Duquesne University adheres to the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders resolution that students need not respond to offers of admission until April 15th. Therefore, subsequent offers of admission may not be made until after April 15th.
