Theology Graduate Admissions

Applicants for admission into an M.A. program in Theology should have a B.A. degree with a major in Theology, or its equivalent.

Applicants for admission into the Ph.D. program should have earned an M.A. degree in Theology, or its equivalent.

Equivalency is judged by the admissions committee of the Theology Department after it receives the applicant's credentials and considers such things as work-related learning, seminary or other religious education, teaching and other kinds of ministerial work.

Students may pursue the desired degree on either a full-time (3 courses per semester) or a part-time basis. The great majority of graduate courses are offered in the evening to accommodate students who have full-time employment. All graduate degrees may also be pursued in the summer.

All graduate applicants must submit the following:

  1. Two copies of the Graduate School's official application form and a $50 non-refundable application fee (note that online applications are free);

  2. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work to date;

  3. Three letters of recommendation, in the Theology Department's format, from former teachers;

  4. Official GRE scores from the Princeton-based Education Testing Service (This requirement is waived for applicants who have completed their previous formal education five or more years prior to the date of application);

  5. A one-page statement of purpose in pursuing the desired degree at Duquesne. Candidates for the program in pastoral ministry must also have a personal interview with the director of that program or a designated representative. Applicants to the Ph.D. program must submit a written research paper done for one of their courses at the M.A. or M.Div. level, or a similar type paper. M.A. applicants should submit the necessary material at least two months prior to the semester in which they wish to begin course work.

Additional Information

The deadline for Ph.D. applications and for all requests for scholarship help is February 1.
