Biography

Marc W. Harrold is Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Duquesne University’s School of Pharmacy.  He received his B.S. in pharmacy from Duquesne and his Ph.D. degree in Medicinal Chemistry from The Ohio State University.  He joined the faculty at Duquesne in the fall of 1987 as an assistant professor and was promoted to the rank of full professor in 2002.  Dr. Harrold has introduced a variety of teaching innovations into his courses, many of which have been published in AJPE, presented at AACP annual meetings, and have been used/adopted by other medicinal chemistry faculty.  He published the first edition of the text book, Basic Concepts in Medicinal Chemistry in 2013, a text that has been adopted by numerous Schools of Pharmacy across the country.  Second and third editions of the text where published in 2017 and 2023. Dr. Harrold has also been a long-time contributor to Foye’s Principles of Medicinal Chemistry and was named the chief editor for the 9th edition of this text.  

Dr. Harrold has been involved in promoting pharmacy education throughout his career.  He twice served as Chair Elect, Chair, and Immediate Past Chair for the AACP Chemistry Section.  He has also served on the Academic Sections Coordinating Committee, the Task force on E-Education, as the Chair of the 2005-06 AACP Educational Outcomes and Objectives Supplements Development Task Force, and on the AACP Taskforce to Develop a Toolbox to Assist New Faculty, Mentors, and Department Chairs.  Within Duquesne, Dr. Harrold has served as the advisor for ASP, Rho Chi, and three graduating classes.  Dr. Harrold has been honored with a number of School and University teaching awards including the1996 APhA Outstanding Academy of Students of Pharmacy Chapter Advisor Award, the 1999 Duquesne University, School of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumnus Award, the 2004 Rho Chi Advisor of the Year Award, and the 1995 and 2017 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
