Biography

Dr. Mayra Toney joined the faculty in the School of Nursing in 2018. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She received both her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Carlow University. She brings 13 years of experience in nursing education to her role. Her nursing career consists of 16 years as a professional staff nurse in surgical gynecology oncology, utilization review/quality assurance, and later as a health management coordinator, all at Magee-Womens Hospital. In 2005, Dr. Toney joined Mercy Hospital School of Nursing where she taught, as well as chaired courses at the foundations, adult medical surgical, and leadership levels. Dr. Toney was the recipient of the 2012 Cameos of Caring Nurse Educator Award. She has participated in poster and podium presentations both locally and nationally. She is passionate about nursing education, and holds particular interest in culture care and ethnonursing. Dr. Toney is bilingual and has facilitated student exposure to a pediatric Latino clinic in the Pittsburgh area.
