Profile Information

In my research I develop economic models of firm behavior, find new ways to evaluate firms' performance measures (i.e., productivity and efficiency), and analyze large databases. As an applied econometrician and micro-economist, my research is multi-method in that I use a variety of research methods ranging from analysis of secondary data which involve analyzing firm performance measures using large panel databases of establishments and firms (e.g., US Census Bureau, ORBIS, Compustat, and KLD databases) to developing and analyzing surveys. My research is multi-disciplinary in that I use economics, business and statistics theories, and it is also multi-level as I examine economic behavior at multiple levels-at the plant level, firm level and industry (aggregate) level. My training in applied microeconomics, environmental economics and econometrics has allowed me to channel my research efforts into three main research streams: (1) economics of productivity, efficiency, and innovation, (2) environmental economics, and (3) microeconomics of trade and investment.

I investigate how innovation and technological change play a role in a firm's production decisions and analyze the impact of the firm's involvement in international trade on its product mix, productivity, efficiency, cost structure and innovation. In addition, I examine environmentally friendly technical changes that alleviate a firm's existing polluting activities, design effective policy instruments which lead to better outcomes for both the environment and producers, and analyze the effect of corporate social responsibility on shareholder wealth.
