PTK understands the importance of supporting transfer students, and the Transfer Honor Role recognizes colleges and universities whose best practices offer outstanding pathways that welcome and assist students as they transition to a new school.
As part of its methodology for developing the annual Transfer Honor Roll, PTK considers dozens of metrics and factors, including support and success of transfer students, campus life, admissions practices, cost and financial aid and degree completion. Duquesne is among 171 schools named to the 2022 Transfer Honor Roll.
Duquesne transfer student Drew Franks-Meinert, an O'Hara Township resident, left Kent State University after one semester. "I felt overwhelmed by how big the school was and it wasn't really surrounded by much of a city," she said. "I selected Duquesne because it offers excellent programs and has a community feel. People are really nice here."
After completing a six-month internship with Habitat for Humanity in Florida followed by a service year as a FEMA Corps member at AmeriCorps NCCC, Franks-Meinert transferred to Duquesne in fall 2020. "My transition was easy, and because Duquesne hosts transfer orientation events I was able to meet other transfer students and make a lot of friends," said Franks, a communication studies major and film studies minor who also is a student ambassador in the Office of Admissions.
Gabrielle Matich, director of transfer admissions at Duquesne, credits the University's comprehensive manner in how it works with transfer students for being recognized by PTK.
"Duquesne's holistic approach ensures that our transfer students are taken care of from the first point of connection to graduation and beyond," Matich said. "It's an honor to receive recognition from such a prestigious organization that highlights the support and experience that we provide our transfer students."
More than 200 students transfer from other universities and community colleges to Duquesne University every year.
"This award is so important because it is based on what students tell us they need from their transfer experience," said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, president and chief executive officer of Phi Theta Kappa. "We are honored to recognize the colleges and universities working exceptionally hard to create stronger pathways to bachelor's degree completion for all students."
