Duquesne University President Ken Gormley has reappointed Dr. Mary Ellen Glasgow to another three-year term as dean of the School of Nursing. The new term starts Friday, July 1, 2023.
Dean of the School of Nursing since 2012, Glasgow will start her third term with Duquesne's nursing school having ascended in national rankings and maintained those high rankings for many of its programs.
Under Glasgow's leadership, Duquesne nursing students have achieved the highest NCLEX-RN scores in school history, enrollment has grown in the school's programs, and research and scholarship have significantly increased. Glasgow frequently publishes about issues related to nurses' pivotal role in health care equity and practice, in addition to pursuing her own scholarship.
"Mary Ellen Glasgow is truly a leader focused on students attaining professional excellence," said Duquesne University President Ken Gormley. "Her standards for her programs and expectations for her students are extremely high. She also knows that future nurses benefit from working with impassioned practitioners who use their experience to help students truly achieve and envision more than they think possible. We are very fortunate to have Dean Glasgow leading the School of Nursing. Her re-appointment is richly deserved."
Glasgow's leadership has bolstered the school's reputation as a national leader in nursing education, emphasizing social justice, digital technologies and graduates with strong ethical-reasoning skills.
"Dean Glasgow has been exceptional in positioning Duquesne as a national leader in nursing education," said Duquesne Provost Dr. David Dausey. "At the same time, she has partnered with other schools at the University to develop innovative programs designed to meet the growing needs for emerging health care practices and technologies. Her understanding of what is needed now and, in the future, has created opportunity for our students and has had a positive impact on her profession and our region."
Glasgow led the development of the nation's first dual undergraduate Biomedical Engineering and Nursing Program, started Duquesne's Ph.D. program in Nursing Ethics and recently partnered with the Allegheny School of Anesthesia and the University's John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences to create a three-year Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice Program that will start in fall 2022.
"The work we do in the School of Nursing prepares students for a challenging and rewarding field that is always changing," said Glasgow. "The pandemic years have underscored that, but the pace of medical technology already was pushing us forward quickly. It is a privilege to work with our faculty and students at Duquesne and the local health care community to prepare health care professionals who will be so critical to the social fabric of our region and nation."
Glasgow has also served as vice provost for research at Duquesne since July 2021, providing strategic guidance, expertise and operational direction for research activities.
Prior to joining Duquesne, Glasgow was associate dean for nursing, undergraduate health professions and continuing education, as well as chair of undergraduate programs, at Drexel University. She is the author of four books, two of which earned the American Journal of Nursing's first place Book-of-the-Year Award. In addition, she has published more than 100 articles and book chapters and has presented nationally and internationally. Glasgow also is a fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing, among other honors.
Glasgow earned her BSN from Gwynedd Mercy University, her MSN from Villanova University and her Ph.D. in nursing science from Duquesne. Gwynedd Mercy awarded Glasgow its Distinguished Alumni Award.
