Duquesne University President Ken Gormley has appointed Jim Miller senior vice president for university advancement, effective immediately. Since July 1, 2021, Miller had held the position on an interim basis after a long tenure as associate vice president and senior advisor to the president for leadership giving.

The University's Board of Directors formally approved Miller's appointment to this Cabinet-level post at its meeting last Friday, indicating its enthusiastic support of the decision.

"Since my days as Dean of the School of Law and throughout my presidency, Jim Miller has exemplified for me how best to involve, engage, and inspire people-alumni and friends of the University alike-to support student-focused giving," said Gormley. "In just the few months he has spent leading the advancement division on an interim basis, Jim has injected new energy and urgency into their work, forged strong relationships with his peers on the Cabinet, and demonstrated a very compelling sense of what is possible. He has earned the necessary trust and support to pursue and achieve very ambitious goals for Duquesne and its students."

Miller has worked in various advancement capacities at Duquesne for nearly 34 years. After he earned a bachelor's degree in business, management and marketing from Duquesne in 1987, he joined the Division of Advancement that same year.

During his time at the University, Miller has worked on three successful capital campaigns: Spirit of the 90s (1987-1993), Celebration of Excellence-Opportunity of a Lifetime (1995-1999) and Advancing our Legacy (2008-2012). The most recent campaign, which is being led by Miller as the chief development officer at the University, is already setting new records at Duquesne and has raised $163.5 million as of June 30, 2021.

"I am humbled to have had a voice in the strategic conversations at the highest levels at Duquesne and to better connect our division's work with alumni and friends to the mission and future-focused vision for Duquesne," said Miller. "I look forward to collaborating with our campus community and our alumni communities to formally launch the new campaign soon, with significant momentum already taking place thanks to key donor-supported projects like the proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine and the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse."
