Commemorate Juneteenth 2022 at a special virtual event hosted by Duquesne University's Chief Diversity Officer Crystal McCormick Ware that will feature keynote speaker Samuel W. Black, director of the Heinz History Center African-American Program.

Attend Emancipation Days: Juneteenth in History via Zoom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, to learn about the relevance and history of Juneteenth, and how it is celebrated across the country.

"Duquesne University is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion-it is part of our mission," McCormick Ware said. "This webinar, which will outline the history of Juneteenth, is important because it will educate the Duquesne community, along with the nation, about why Juneteenth is significant in American history and why it has been recognized as a federal holiday."

A former president of the Association of African American Museums (2011-2016) and executive council of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), Black will guide attendees through the background and cultural importance of Juneteenth and its legacy moving forward.

"Freedom has rarely been extended to all people," Black said. "To me, this is one part of the freedom story in America. We need to understand it. The history of Juneteenth offers important value to us all."

All are welcome and encouraged to attend this free event and can RSVP online.
