Faculty from the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University attended the 2024 Association of America Law Schools (AALS) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., from January 3-6. The theme “Defending Democracy” was woven throughout the workshops and sessions, with eleven Duquesne Kline faculty members contributing through presentations and ideas alongside colleagues throughout the nation.

Duquesne Kline law professors led important conversations around democracy. Professor Ryan Williams presented on the panel of “Democracy Demands Diversity” exploring democracy, diversity, and liberty and how these intersect with election law.

Professor Gene Mazo was part of two sessions at AALS. He first organized the Constitutional Law session “Democracy at the Podium: Arguing the Rules of Politics Before Today’s Supreme Court” about the Supreme Court being at the center of how our nation functions—from gerrymandering to voting rights to campaign finance to regulating presidential elections. Professor Mazo also served as a commentator alongside Professor Bruce Ledewitz for “New Voices on Methods of Defending Democracy Research and Scholarship.” This session shared research and work about the ongoing research and scholarly work around democracy.

Professor Tara Willke, Associate Dean for Strategic Academic Programs and Director of the Legal Research and Writing Program, was a commentator for “Legal Writing, Reasoning, and Research Work-in-Progress” highlighting works of those in the field as well as introducing projects and workshopping papers.

Also proudly presenting were Professor Dana Neacsu about law libraries and legal education and Professor Rona Kauffman as part of the Women in Legal Education section.

Also at the annual meeting, as chair of the leaderships section, Dean April Barton was on a panel presenting “Defending Democracy through Effective Leadership Education.”

Professor Ashley London rounded out the annual meeting, receiving the AALS Impact Award for the AALS Academic Support Section.
