Jake Sebastiao, GP'10, reflects on his journey to becoming a preceptor and how he helps others become empowered pharmacists.
Jake Sebastiao, GP’10, became a preceptor to help students become empowered pharmacists with a genuine passion for pharmacy. Currently the Vice President of Pharmacy Operations at AlixaRX, a leader in on-site pharmacy systems for long-term and post-acute care facilities, Jake and AlixaRX welcome students to learn the clinical roles of a long-term care pharmacist. During their clinical rotations, students also develop critical thinking skills in a technology-driven pharmacy environment, helping them thrive in any of the alternative career options in pharmacy.
As a preceptor, Jake creates a learning environment that supports a student's growth, where they can build the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to achieve their bigger goals. Guiding students through the transition from academic learning to the professional world, Jake walks alongside them, helping to navigate potential challenges, make informed decisions and ultimately thrive in their careers.
Precepting students has been an incredibly rewarding experience for Jake.
“Precepting is a valuable chance to build a strong professional network and contribute to shaping the next generation of empowered pharmacists. Watching students gain confidence, develop skills and deepen their understanding of the profession is truly fulfilling, and it's a key part of strengthening pharmacy.”
Through precepting, Jake focuses on creating a supportive, personalized, and non-judgmental environment where students feel comfortable asking questions.
Jake believes in offering students practical, real-world learning experiences that go beyond traditional clinical practice. AlixaRx holds engaging lectures and discussions on topics that spark interest, such as understanding pharmacy profit and loss statements, planning for retirement and preparing for successful job interviews. These conversations help students stay engaged and provide valuable knowledge they can apply in their pharmacy careers.
