Alysia McCray is a beacon of inspiration and a reminder that every journey—no matter how challenging—not only shapes our own destiny, but also our community's future.

Alysia is a tenacious undergraduate student in Duquesne's Biology program, whose unique journey reflects resilience, passion and a commitment to breaking barriers and reaching her bigger goals.

Alysia's horizon-expanding journey into academia began as a desire to lead by example to her two small children. As a mother, she wants her children to not just see her succeed, but to also see the resilience and determination needed to overcome challenges in order to succeed.

Alysia's passion for biology stems from childhood curiosity and a deep desire to positively impact mankind.

"I want a career as a surgeon-scientist where I can increase diversity in doctorate degree programs and establish a comprehensive pathway so others can reach their professional goals," said Alysia.

But balancing the roles of a mother and student is no easy task. Alysia's husband stands as a pillar of support. Together, they form an incredible team, enabling Alysia to pursue her professional aspirations without compromise.

Alongside her supportive family, Alysia knows that there is a supportive network all rooting for her success. From Duquesne's community of student peers, professors and mentors in the Center for Excellence in Diversity and Student Inclusion to community support from the Sister Thea Bowman Foundation, Alysia feels confident that she is where she needs to be.

"They've all created a nurturing environment that is crucial for my success," Alysia acknowledges.

Alysia's perseverance and experiences at Duquesne has inspired her two older sisters as well as others within her community to return to school.

"For any non-traditional students considering a return to school, I recommend that you build a diverse support system, leverage life experiences and embrace your own unique journey."

Alysia's journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the lasting impact it can have across generations.
