Biography

Dr. Branden Nemecek is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy and a clinical pharmacy specialist practicing in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at UPMC Mercy Hospital. He serves Director of Residency Programs for all Duquesne residency programs while serving as the program director for our PGY2 Internal Medicine program in association with Mercy Hospital. His teaching focus is in gastroenterology/nutrition, inpatient management of endocrine disorders, clinical patient assessment, and he co-directs the acute care concentration. Dr. Nemecek has won multiple Teacher of the Year awards (given each year by each class at Duquesne) and one "TOPS" award, which is given to the faculty who had the largest impact on a graduating class throughout their education at Duquesne.

His research and publication interests focus are within the nephrology and gastroenterology areas with additional interest in retrospective reviews on safety and efficacy of therapies within the general medicine population. As of 2023, he has published 16 peer reviewed articles, 8 book chapters, received 2 grants, authored 48 posters at national meetings, mentored 18 students or residents through conference travel awards, and Dr. Nemecek has published a text through ASHP Publications titled "Demystifying Drug Dosing in Renal Disease."

He is active on a national level with both ASHP and ACCP. For ACCP this includes serving as the chair of the Nephrology PRN from 2022-2023, serving as a member of multiple committees within the Adult Medicine PRN, serving as co-chair of the ACCP Educational Affairs Committee in 2023-24, and having served previously on the Educational Affairs Committee as well as the Member Relations Committee. In addition, Dr. Nemecek is a graduate of the inaugural Professional Leadership Development Program offered by ACCP in 2023. Through ASHP, Dr. Nemecek has served as the Adult Medicine Network Facilitator at three ASHP Midyear meetings and recently was a presenter at Midyear in 2023 on the role of SGLT2 inhibitors for patients with renal disease as part of the therapeutic debates seminar. Dr. Nemecek has presented CE’s on a national level on IV Iron in 2022, Updates in Anemia in CKD in 2023, and Updates in Eosinophilic Esophagitis in 2023.
